History of

Hillcrest

As a neighborhood we date back to 1954-1955. This was all once Maverick land that was sold, the western part to the Finesilvers and the eastern part for a while to the city of Balcones Heights. When Balcones Heights was having financial difficulties in their early days, they sold that land to the city of San Antonio. This gave way to development. It was before Wonderland, before the medical center, and before Loop 410. Across Hillcrest from us was Sunshine Ranch belonging to the Maverick Family and the city of Balcones Heights.

Hillcrest sprawls across Babcock. We are two different zip codes. Some original members and the second and even third generations of some original families are still living here, Jeff Adams, Dave Turner, the Ybanez family, Barbara Christiansen, I believe Mary Anne Gonzales, Gerald Heye, and others. Many of our neighbors went to Jefferson, including my husband. The Catholic Churches of St. Luke's and St. Paul's serve us as well as other churches. At the very beginning, the Jewish synagogue Agudas Achim was a few miles from us and thus some of our earlier neighbors were Jewish. Block parties and dinners were not uncommon on some blocks.

Other neighbors came each decade. Young families, couples looking to retire, and those in between.

When I go to the suburbs and see walls that keep the rest of us out, small lots, and few trees, I don't think we've missed anything. Our only rules are inclusion of all and respect for one another.
